Providing Hunger ReliefHunger can affect people from all walks of life. Many Americans are one job loss or medical crisis away form food insecurity - but some people, including children and seniors, may be at greater risk of hunger than other.
Many people facing hunger are forced to make tough choices between buying food and medical bills, food and rent and/or food and transportation. This struggle goes beyond harming an individual family's future, it can harm our whole community. |
Established in 2013The Food Pantry was created because the Bethel Community Presbyterian Church is active with the April Showers program to support the homeless and marginalized in San Leandro. We recognized there was a major shortage of available food resources in the community to serve these individuals. We spent a year researching and planning, with many different ideas surfacing, but finally decided the food pantry concept would provide more food and reach more people. In 2017 we formed a Board of Directors and filed paperwork for the San Leandro Community Food Pantry to become a 501(c)(3) non-profit.
Our GoalProvide hunger relief to low-income and homeless Alameda County residents through our weekly food pantry assistance.

How we get our FoodMost of our food comes from our local grocery rescue program. Our volunteers drive around and collect food grocery stores that would otherwise be thrown out. When we are able, we supplement the rescue program donations by purchasing food staples (i.e.: beans, rice, tuna) from the Alameda County Food Bank with the cash donations we receive from community members.
